Radio frequency identification (RFID) Smart Cards is a generic term that is used to describe a system that transmits the identity (in the form of a unique serial number) of an object or person wirelessly, using radio waves. It’s grouped under the broad category of automatic identification technologies.
RFID is in use all around us. If you have ever chipped your pet with an ID tag, used ETag on a toll road, you’ve used RFID. In addition, RFID is increasingly used with biometric technologies for security.
Unlike ubiquitous UPC bar-code technology, RFID technology does not require contact or line of sight for communication. RFID data can be read through the human body, clothing and non-metallic materials.
RFID smart cards are commonly used by a variety of organisations such as schools, universities, libraries, clubs, hotels and throughout the retails sector. RFID smart cards are used for a wide range of applications like access control, ticketing and cashless monitory transaction.
RFID Smart cards can be used as a great marketing tool. For example in retail stores, customers with an RFID Smart Card can walk in to your store, once in the store your RFID Smart Card will flag the customers details and the store assistant would now know that X customer is a VIP customer and whether or not they made a purchase even if they then exit the store.
