MIFARE technology is for smart key cards or other smart cards. Basically, there are two criterion to define smart cards: one is the method of reading and writing data from the card, and the second is the type of chip within the card and its capabilities.
MIFARE KEY CARDS
Contactless MIFARE key cards are proximity cards (these do not need to be touched). MIFARE key cards communicate with and are powered by the reader through RF induction(Passive RFID Mode). RFID cards(‘What is RFID?’), MIFARE cards and radio frequency integrated circuit (RFIC) cards are all contactless cards.
The MIFARE name is derived from the term Mikron FARE Collection system, the trademark of NXP Semiconductors. MIFARE key cards employ an RFID between the card and the reader, so cards do not require insertion of the card. Instead, the card is passed along the exterior of the reader.
A contactless smartchip is included in the card, as well as the internal memory and a small antenna. MIFARE cards communicates with a reader through a contactless RF interface. The contactless interface provides users with the convenience of allowing the contactless device to be read at short distances with fast transfer of data. A MIFARE card has a much larger memory than other RFID cards and is widely used in hotels as payment cards and work with hotel door locks for identification purposes.
In brief, MIFARE technology, a trademark of NXP Semiconductors, is used for contactless hotel door lock key cards and is RF enabled. Whereas, RFID is also RF-enabled but is used for identification purposes.
